Sustainability Blog Post #3

I have kept up with my responsibilities to save water and energy. I have kept reminding my parents and sister about what I am doing and tell them to join me. Its is working. I thought the sustainability fair was really fun. It really helped me to understand what other things are going on around the island to help the earth. As I explained my blog to a man, he told me about the water underneath the island. As he explained, once the water is pumped up it fills with salt water and from then on the fresh water will never ever again be fresh. I thought this was important because eventually there will be no more water down there and it will never again be able to have fresh water in there. This man also made me realize that we are really working on a personal level. This was important to me because it shows that if we all do small things on a personal level we are able to make a larger impact. It showed me that one person doesn't need to give up everything; but many people can give a little to get more work done. I will try to maintain where I am now and do more things to help with  the promises that I have made.

Sustainability Post #2

I think I am making a difference in my house about the energy that I am saving. I think I still need to work on saving more water though. I seem to take the same length showers instead of cutting down. I have told my parents about what I am doing and they are helping me. We make sure that all the lights are out when we leave the house, even if it is just a short ride down to Punahou and back. I have to remind my sister a lot because she has the most lights in her room. After water polo, I usually just dry off and go down to get picked up, I think maybe if I rinse off at school I won't have to spend so much time in the shower at home getting all the chlorine off.

MND Sustainability Blog Post #1

For the use of energy I think I am doing a pretty good job. I try to remember to turn off any light in my house that is not being used and I also try not to leave my fan and computer on all night so that it is not continuously using energy when I'm not using it. I recycle a lot. I recycle every bottle that I can and I also go with my dad to recycle all the things we collect at the end of the week and the bin by Manoa Elementary. I think I waste a lot of water though; I take really long showers. Besides taking long showers, I don’t waste that much water. We have three cars at my house. My dad has his work truck and my mom has her van that she uses all the time. The last car we hardly use unless something is wrong with one of the other cars. My parents have been trying to eat healthier with brown rice and stuff. We are also trying to eat out less.
I think that I can really work on wasting so much water and eating healthier. I think I can do these things because they are small things that will have a big impact if I hold to my promises. The way that I can do this is taking shorter showers and getting the rest of my family, like my sister and mom, to cut their shower time too. I think to eat healthier I will come with my mom to the store so that we can get healthier food. This way, I won't even have the option of eating unhealthy food. I'll try and bring home lunch more and if I buy things at the snack I will always get water and some kind of fruit.

XXV
1. Let those who are in favour with their stars
2. Of public honour and proud titles boast,
/
Those who are luckier that him, people with more power and money.\

3. Whilst I, whom fortune of such triumph bars

4. Unlook'd for joy in that I honour most./
He is unable to make as much money as them, overlooked by the one he cares about.

5. Great princes' favourites their fair leaves spread

6. But as the marigold at the sun's eye,/
The people that are rich spread with the favors of the prince.

7. And in themselves their pride lies buried,

8. For at a frown they in their glory die.
/
Because of all the favors, their prides is shattered.

9. The painful warrior famoused for fight,

10. After a thousand victories once foiled,

11. Is from the book of honour razed quite,

12. And all the rest forgot for which he toiled:
/
Even if a great warrior loses one battle he is forever shamed.

13. Then happy I, that love and am beloved,

14. Where I may not remove nor be removed
He is happy the way he is because he is cared for and is in a good place.

I like this poem because I think it shows about how people take so much time into their appearance of the rest of the world that they forget who they really who they are and who they want to be. I also like it because it tells that he is in a place where he can be what he wants and where he has a sort of controlled power.

Blues Poem

I only see your face in my dreams,
Only in my dreams

I wake to find your face fading,
Fading into the washed-redwood wall in front of me.
I remember flashes of my dreams splattered on the walls of my mind.
Your shining face staring into the sky filled with nothing,
Not even the washed-wave ridden ocean blue sky.
The patience of your hands, drawing miniature unworldly creatures that pop alive on the page.
I only see your face in my dream
Only in my dreams,
Only in my dreams.

I press my think machine to play the movie again,
It has already been returned.
The olive-green of your eye glow with anticipation,
With the Eiffel tower as your diving board,
You plunge deep past the memories of kindergarten,
Downward into my mind,
Only to unlock the untouched memory just below my temple.
You return to the surface, with only a slip of fabric in your hand.
You seem to contemplate whether to speak or not,
Your sweet, engaging face brimming with nervousness.
Spontaneously the dream is absorbed back into my mind before your lips could open.
I only see your face in my dreams,
Only in my dreams

Though I don’t know your name,
I know your face,
Your voice,
Your laugh,
Even your favorite band.

I only see your face in my dreams,
Only in my dreams,
Only in my dreams do I feel my heart flutter or have my body pulse with happiness.

Till the day I learn to detach soul from body,
Till the day I learn to pick through my dreams,
Only till then will I know your name.
Till then I only see you in my dreams,
Only in my dreams.

Ritual Poem for Driving Stick Shift

1. Step in to an immense forest green truck with three passengers and one father.
2. Make sure the stick is neutral.
3. Depress clutch and turn key away from the driver, you.
4. Move the stick to the left and down.
5. Depress clutch.
6. Attempt to release the clutch slowly, but fail, jerk the truck in to motion, and watch from the mirror as all your passengers hit the seat in front of them.
7. Regain control of truck and try again.
8. Slowly creep around the lush weed field that is your personal freeway.
9. Depress clutch.
10. Move to first gear (one bump to the right on the stick from first gear).
11. Again depress the clutch while simultaneously slightly pressing on the gas peddle.
12. Fail miserably and hear the truck suffocate and stall.
13. Once your passengers have stop laughing in your face, try again.
14. Depress clutch.
15. Place the big toe from your right foot on the gas peddle while reaching with your left foot to let go of the clutch easily.
16. Meet only with disaster and hang your head in shame.
17. Give permission to your extremely nervous father to leave truck and allow the other people in the cab to touch solid ground.
18. Let father to consume some Heineken to dull his anxiety.
19. Grab air guitar with plectrum in hand, and play along with the lame song on the radio.
20. Once the predictable guitar riff they call a solo is over, call everyone back in to the forest green truck and begin round 2.
21. Go through steps 1-18 until your ideal goal of first gear is reached.
